The engineers at Acciona contacted Giant Inflatables to custom design a fall arrest soft landing deck for repairs and maintenance projects for boarding platforms in Victoria’s train station network.
Custom-designed fall arrest soft landing deck
The inflatable soft landing deck had to be custom-engineered to accommodate the railway tracks. The inflatable deck had to be set up and dismantled quickly and easily, requiring little human resources.
The windows for maintenance are restrictive and unflexible. Therefore, repairs and maintenance would only occur between the last trains at night and the first trains in the morning.
A Fall arrest soft landing deck: Safe working environment and increased productivity
The inflatable soft landing deck was designed for use along the boarding platforms for the train, with recesses built into the bottom to accommodate the rail lines. The seven-metre inflatable deck was designed in two parts for easier manageability, with a heavy-duty industrial velcro attached band between the two to fasten the two parts together and eliminate the risk of falls in between.
As the work progresses, the units can be efficiently leap-frogged to the optimal working position, increasing productivity significantly.
One or two people can easily set up the entire inflatable landing deck in minutes, and dismantling is just as fast. This rapid set-up and take-down time substantially improves productivity compared to other safety systems, such as scaffolding and safety barriers.
Although the human safety factor is paramount to the engineers at Acciona, the fall arrest soft landing deck can also protect expensive machinery against damage due to falls.
