Queensland Government Air (QGAir) is the air service of the Queensland Government in Australia. QGAir provides air transportation services to support various government activities and agencies. The agency’s essential functions include emergency services support, medical evacuation, law enforcement operations, government personnel transport, marine pilot transfers and environmental monitoring.

They have strategically located bases across Queensland to provide efficient coverage and support for its diverse regions.

Challenge

QGAir required a mobile abrasive blasting shelter to perform blasting maintenance operations in their hanger and be able to remove the shelter once the maintenance work was complete.

Because the abrasive blasting occurs within the facility, the blasting material had to be contained entirely, leaving the rest of the hanger clean and free from dust and contaminants to preserve the integrity of other rescue equipment. Additionally, the blasting abrasive and contaminants had to be contained in a system allowing recycling.

QGAir required an isolated area within their helicopter hangers to perform regular maintenance and avoid contaminating the surrounding area.

Ezy Mobile Abrasive Blasting Shelter

The Ezy Shelter, an exclusive product of Giant Inflatables Industrial, was the perfect-sized portable shelter to suit QGAir’s needs. It sets up in minutes, occupies a small storage footprint when not in use, and is easily transported to any bases in Queensland.

GII incorporated blasting screens and liners into the shelter’s structure to catch flying debris and blasting media to accommodate the abrasive blasting operations. An air filtration system equipped with a reusable dust bag captured all contaminants for recycling, and the rest of the hanger was left free of contaminants. Additional skins integrated into the shelter’s interior attenuated the noise from blasting.

The mobile abrasive blasting shelter complied with the rigorous requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Board.

Results

The Ezy Mobile Abrasive Blasting Shelter was the cost-effective solution QGAir sought. The shelter delivers substantial cost savings by reducing preparation time typically consumed with scaffolding or space occupied by permanent structures. The quick setup process allows for shorter maintenance periods, and the ease of transport makes the blasting shelter a practical maintenance solution wherever needed.
