Background
Cubic Defence
Australia Wide
Cubic Defence is a world-leading provider of military training simulation systems and services. It offers training and technical assistance, including exercise planning, validation, and innovative simulations. Cubic Defence provides training solutions to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), which enables training proficiency using innovative solutions for improved performance-based training.
Cubic Defence approached Giant Inflatables Industrial (GII) to manufacture an inflatable temporay workshop measuring 12m x 12m x 6m for fitting equipment to personnel and vehicles in all weather conditions.
Challenge
When undertaking our discovery process into the specifications of Cubic, GII learned the inflatable temporary workshop was to enable M1 Abrams Tanks with gas turbine jet engines to drive into the shelter, have the necessary work undertaken, and subsequently drive directly out the opposite end it entered. Additionally, the shelter would require high-temperature protection against the gas turbine jet engines.
Furthermore, the height of the entrance and exit to the shelter would need a minimum of a 4.3m clearance to ensure the tank could easily pass through on entry and exit.
In addition to the tank service work, the temporary shelter would also serve for field training where Cubic would conduct and record video presentations. This use required the shelter’s interior to minimise ambient exterior noises.
Customised Inflatable Temporary Workshop
The Standard Giant Inflatable Industrial Temporary Workshop was the robust solution the Cubic sought in their extensive needs for a Shelter.
To start, the 12m x 12m x 6-meter high temporary shelter boasts a large entry and exit as a standard option, allowing ample space and height for the tanks to enter, have the necessary work done and exit without any problems. The rugged air-frame structure can withstand winds up to 80km per hour, providing a dependable workspace and learning environment regardless of weather conditions, and the structure’s innate height and built-in windows allow for natural light work conditions.
From a safety standpoint, due to work with gas turbine jets, the heat-resistant specifications were fulfilled by integrating blast screens made with Aerogel, which provides passive fire protection.
Acoustically, the air-framed inflatable shelters tend to absorb sound waves, reducing external noise and silencers were installed with the inflation system. This feature resulted in an ideal training and recording space when needed.
Results
The inflatable temporary shelter provided Cubic Defense with the ideal, cost-effective solution to all their requirements. The fully transportable shelter fits on a single pallet when not in use and can fit on the back of a ute. The set-up of the temporary shelter can take as little as seven minutes, and the take-down is just as seamless.
To top it off, the shelter was fully branded with the Cubic Defences logo for flawless brand recognition.
