Joseph Banks Secondary College has introduced a state-of-the-art space education facility as part of its $21 million expansion. A key feature of this facility is a Mars simulation dome, designed to provide students with an immersive environment for space-related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. This project required advanced engineering and technical expertise to integrate an inflatable Simulated Mars Landscape into a permanent educational setting.

Giant Inflatables Industrial (GII) was engaged early in the project to provide technical consultancy, shaping the original design and engineering framework for the Mars Scape inflatable dome.

Engineering and Design

The design process involved:

  • Material Selection: GII identified fire-resistant, high-durability fabrics to comply with Australian safety standards and ensure longevity in a high-use educational setting.
  • Structural Integration: The dome needed to fit seamlessly within a rigid airlock system. GII’s design allowed for precise alignment, ensuring a secure connection and functional compatibility between the inflatable structure and the fixed architectural elements.
  • Safety Considerations: Fire resistance, emergency egress, and structural integrity were key considerations. GII’s expertise ensured that all necessary safety measures were built into the design, from reinforced seams to controlled inflation and deflation mechanisms.

Fabrication and Installation

Following the finalisation of the design and tender process, GII was contracted to manufacture and install the dome. The team used precision fabrication techniques to realise the structure, ensuring exact alignment with the rigid entryway.

The installation process required:

  • Securing the inflatable to its foundation with minimal movement tolerance.
  • Integrating lighting and structural reinforcements to ensure durability under continuous use.
  • Conducting rigorous safety testing before commissioning the dome for educational use.

Results

The Mars Scape dome now serves as an essential educational tool, offering a safe and interactive environment for students to experience space exploration concepts. GII’s involvement highlights its technical proficiency in designing, engineering, and implementing complex industrial inflatables that meet stringent safety and operational requirements.
