ProStrip Sandblasting secured a high-profile contract at Marvel Stadium, which involved sandblasting 4,000 sqm of concrete surfaces on the stadium concourse. The objective was to etch intricate decorative stencil patterns into the flooring, which serves as a primary connector between the stadium and the surrounding precinct.
The scale of the job demanded a specific approach. As the worksite was located in a dense urban environment with high foot traffic, a mobile inflatable blasting shelter was the only viable option to manage the environmental impact. ProStrip required a containment solution that looked professional and performed reliably, protecting the surrounding environment and the artwork itself.
Challenge
Working in a public space presents unique difficulties. Contractors must maintain a clean and organised site at all times. Marvel Stadium operates on a strict AFL event schedule, and work cannot interfere with games or interfere with crowd circulation.
ProStrip faced several specific hurdles:
- Strict Policies: Site management prohibited water usage because the area lacked slurry runoff systems.
- Dust Control: Silica dust containment was mandatory to protect the public and workers.
- Noise Sensitivity: Nearby businesses and residents required minimal acoustic disruption.
- Weather: The complex laser-cut stencils required an arid surface for application.
Rain could ruin the stencil application and delay the project, so ProStrip required a mobile enclosure that could withstand the elements and be moved around easily as work progressed.
Design and Fabrication
Giant Inflatables Industrial provided the Ezy Inflatable Blasting Shelter. This custom structure is designed to integrate directly with a 10,000 CFM dust collector, preventing hazardous silica dust from escaping into the public concourse.
The shelter features included:
- Rapid Setup: The team could inflate and deflate the unit quickly to accommodate the event schedule.
- Mobility: ProStrip could move the shelter easily across the 4,000 sqm work area.
- Acoustic Dampening: The inflatable shelter and specialised nozzles reduced blasting noise levels by up to 10 dB.
ProStrip combined the inflatable blasting shelter with Snake Bite sandblasting nozzles. This combination reduced noise levels by up to 10 dB. The unit also protected the sensitive laser-cut stencils from wind and rain, allowing the team to survey and blast the patterns with precision.
The visual impact of the branded shelter also presented a professional image to the public.
Results
The Ezy Inflatable Blasting Shelter allowed work to continue regardless of weather conditions. Crews sandblasted the decorative patterns without rain delays or moisture issues, and the containment system captured dust effectively. The events at the stadium proceeded without interruption, and local businesses reported no noise complaints during the operation.
