LOCATION:
Cape Town, South Africa
Epping Fire Station, South Africa, located in Cape Town, South Africa, serves as the region’s central hub for fire and rescue operations. As the main branch of the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, it manages logistics, dispatch, and response coordination for emergency situations. Given its critical role, the station requires efficient, rapid-deployment solutions for command and operational management in the field.

Challenge

Effective command and coordination are essential for the rapid Deployment of On-Site Command Centres During fire and emergency incidents.

Traditional metal-framed structures can be cumbersome, time-consuming to set up, and challenging to transport. Epping Fire Station required a mobile command solution that could be deployed quickly, withstand harsh environmental conditions, and support emergency logistics and planning.

Specialised Solution

XBeam Self-Erecting Inflatable Shelters. A mobile command centre is an operational hub for emergency teams during fire events, enabling real-time decision-making, coordination, and logistics planning.

The XBeam self-erecting inflatable shelter provides:

Rapid Deployment:

With a packed size of 1.5m x 0.9m x 0.9m and a total weight of 240kg, these shelters are compact, easy to store, and transportable via standard emergency vehicles.

Effortless Setup:

Unlike metal-framed structures that require assembly, the XBeam shelters self-erect within minutes—unroll and activate the blower.

Adaptability & Durability:

Lightweight yet stable, the shelters hold firm in Cape Town’s Southeastern Winds once tethered and pegged.

Versatile Configuration:

The shelters include an entrance tunnel leading into a standard tent as a reception area. Adjustable drop partitions create a passage and three enclosed rooms for specific operational functions inside.

Results:

Beyond Epping Fire Station, these shelters have been deployed across various agencies and applications:

Cape Medical Rescue – The shelters are used for medical response events and triage stations.

Transnet Rail – Repurposed as mobile testing stations for COVID-19 and tuberculosis screenings.

Argus Cycle Tour – The shelters are deployed as medical stations along the route.

Rescue South Africa – Utilised in international disaster relief efforts, including the Japan Tsunami response.
