Mt Lyell Copper Mine / Tasmania
The Mt Lyell Copper Mine, a significant part of Australia’s mining heritage, is situated on the rugged west coast of Tasmania near the township of Queenstown. Until its operations were suspended in July 2014, it proudly held the title of one of Australia’s oldest continually operated mining fields. With a history of over a century, the Mt Lyell Mine has earned its place in mining folklore, standing tall alongside Broken Hill, Coober Pedy, and Mount Morgan. Currently, the Mt Lyell Copper Mine is in a state of care and maintenance while further drilling is taking place to ensure the mine’s future, possibly with new owners. The current copper resources in the ground are almost as much as have been mined in the past century.
Mine Ventilation Shaft
Mines use shafts to ventilate, provide access, deliver materials, and act as ore passes between the surface, upper and lower mine tunnels.
Ventilation Shafts
Underground Mines use shafts to ventilate, provide access, deliver materials, and act as ore passes between the surface, upper and lower mine tunnels.
Challenge
Mine shafts, crucial for various operations in underground mines, can pose significant safety hazards when they are no longer in use. The shafts, particularly those at lower levels, become risky for people who must work or move under or near them due to dislodged debris from the shaft wall and falling objects from the upper level. Sealing such shafts with concrete is often the necessary, albeit expensive, solution to mitigate these risks.
An Inflatable Ventilation Shaft Plug provides a simple solution.
The maintenance crew at The Mt Lyell Copper Mine sought an inflatable ventilation mine shaft plug as a temporary measure to cap a 2.1-meter vent rise. This innovative solution was needed until more permanent formwork could be installed and a permanent 1-meter concrete cap poured. With its simplicity and effectiveness, the Inflatable Ventilation Shaft Plug is a promising addition to the mine’s safety measures.

Double Block and Bleed Duct Isolation System
The double block and bleed system is commonly used for isolating power station ducts and ventilation systems during maintenance and repairs.
Inflatable insulated isolation barriers
Inflatable insulated isolation barriers sequester specific areas and protect workers and the surrounding areas during maintenance and repairs.
